Grape Leather

This wonderful bio leather alternative is made out of wine industry leftovers. The grape leather is European, durable and innovative.

Made in Italy the Grape Leather is an award winning material. Waterproof, soft and incredibly durable and resistant.

How is it made?

After the grape juice is extracted, an organic material called grape pomace remains, which includes skin, stems and seeds. Classified as "low environmental impact", the manufacturing process starts with the recovery of the residues.

After using what's needed to nourish the ground the rest, typically burnt, is now used to make the Grape Leather.

The pomace is then dried and crushed into a fine powder.

The powder is mixed with a base composed of grape oil and a water-based polymer (PU 25%). The aim is to solidify the material and make it resistant and waterproof.

The result is a thick paste that is coloured with non-toxic dyes and then spread out in wide strips on a recycled fibre and then dried.
